Places To Go In Buffalo

This is a list of bars, restaurants, locations, and other places of interest gleaned from a long thread on USCHO. Hopefully the information helps people find things to do on their Frozen Four trip to Buffalo.

An interesting bit of information from a current Buffalo resident that anyone planning some serious drinking might want to keep in mind. I have no way of confirming the state of affairs between the Buffalo police and citizens. Stay away from the Buffalo police! Recently the cops did not get a pay raise, and to show their displeasure they have been setting up road blocks and writing extra tickets. Many people I know, including my father, have compalined that after Sabres games, Cops have set up rode blocks in circles to make the drive home longer. Cause of public out cry they had to scale down there tricks, but they are still playing there games. Honestly I am not letting out all my disgust at this, the cops have been horrible to say the least. So, take it form someone who has lived in Buffalo for 15 years, obey all laws to the max, if you drink at all in the city I advise you don't drive, they have been harrassing drivers who just had one beer that night, I advise heading out of the city if you want to party, plenty of good bars in the North towns that are not hard to find. Also, make sure you park legally, parking tickets have more then doubled in Buffalo. As a Buffalo area resident it upsets me to have to report this, so please have fun and stay out of trouble.

From another poster on the police situation. No need to go the Northtowns (Lockport, North Townawanda, etc.) for bars though. As long as you don't stumble out and punch a cop, or drive while you are drunk you should be fine.

Bars and Restaurants - General Information

Just what hockey fans need, a town where the bars don't close until 4:00 AM!! That appears to be the case as I look through the comments on a number of these USCHO threads. Just what we need, the ability to stay out even later drinking.

You can find a number of bars and late night establishments along Chippewa Street and along Elmwood Avenue, near Buffalo State College. Some of them are mentioned below, but this is a general region of town that contains a number of bars and restaurants so the list here is not all inclusive - just places people have recommended. Not all of the locations mentioned below are on Chippewa or Elmwood.

Besides the obvious Buffalo wings, I highly recommend another Buffalo-only food specialty -- "Beef on Weck" (short for kummelweck). This sandwich is made of thinly sliced roast beef served with horseradish on a special kummelweck bun encrusted with rock salt and seeds and dipped in jus (sometimes called au jus) just before serving. Many Buffalo restaurants serve it, including the Anchor Bar. Try it -- it's totally addictive (especially with beer). Just look up "beef on weck" on your search engine for more information about it.

When asked about places other than the Anchor for wings one poster responded with the following. Take a cab to Duffs at Sheridan and Millersport Highway. You might have to stand in line, but you won't be disappointed.

Canada

Don't forget that if your crossing the border you will need a passport or one of the new enhanced drivers licenses.

A couple of notes from a New Yorker living in Michigan who drives through Canada/Niagara regularly:
  • The Queenston/Lewiston crossing is usually fast
  • The NY State Police set up speed traps near the crossings and on Grand Island, probably to catch out-of-staters. Stay within 5 of the posted speed limit.
  • The OPP (Ontaria Provincial Police) are too busy eating Tim Horton's donuts to pull over Americans. Drive as fast as you want (well, not that fast, but faster that NY).
  • Tim Horton's donuts are good.
  • Duff's wings ... mm
Niagara

Park and walk along the gorge in Niagara Falls, Ontario, very lovely. The town is kinda honky tonk, but can be fun if you like wax museums and 3D-reality rides.

Niagara on the Lake - Wicked cute. About 20 minutes along the Niagara Parkway from Niagara Falls, Ontario. Consider staying a night at the Pillar & Post Inn and eat dinner there (spa treatments). The Buttery's Henry VIII dinner is supposed to be a blast.

Niagara Wine Country: Excellent wines. Inniskillin and Hillenbrand have terrific wines, especially their Eiswein which will be available.
